Discount Power helps you tap into this green energy source

wind power eastern united statesWind power currently accounts for around 8% of the energy-generating capacity here in the United States. That makes wind power the best of any renewable energy resource on this list, including hydroelectricity.

More and more Americans are wanting to use renewable energy like wind power to power everything in their home, like electronics, lights and appliances. And Discount Power is here to help. But first, let’s dig into the facts about wind-generated energy.

How wind power works

Let’s start with wind. It’s created when the sun heats up an area along with the air above it. Since the volume of hot air is less than cooler air, it rises. Cooler air rushes in where the hot air once was, and that’s what generates wind.

All over the United States, there are wind turbines generating electricity. They may look like a fan, but instead of using electricity to create wind, the turbines are using the wind to create electricity. While you may think wind turbine blades look like a fan, they actually work more like a helicopter rotor blade or an airplane wing in that they use the aerodynamic forces from the wind.

When wind hits a wind turbine blade, the air pressure on one side of the blade is decreased. That creates both lift and drag on the blade. Since the lift is stronger than the drag, the blades move and cause the rotor to spin. This powers a generator inside the structure itself to generate wattage with electromagnetic induction. That is what generates electricity.

Wind power facts and figures

Wind power in the United States has tripled in the last 10 years. This growth is the result of more than a decade of investment in wind power. That investment includes more than $142 billion from the American wind power industry.

Here is some information from the American Wind Energy Association about wind power today that might both, interest, and surprise you:
